What we Do
The NYC Sea Gypsies, Inc.™ d/b/a Big Apple Divers™, a non-profit (501c7) scuba diving club, has been serving the New York City scuba diving community since 1971. Big Apple Divers are individuals of all ages and experience levels with one thing in common: we all share a love of the ocean and its exploration.
Among our 300-plus members, you'll find divers who:
Local diving with the Big Apple Divers includes day and weekend boat dives to the best wrecks off the New Jersey and Long Island coasts as well as shore, lake and quarry diving. From time to time, we take trips to destinations such as the Thousand Islands, Rhode Island, North Carolina, the Great Lakes and the Caribbean.
Our monthly meetings, begins with a fast-paced business meeting, dive committee reports, dive reports from members, and an introduction of visitors, all interspersed with late arrivals and muted dinner orders. Following a short surface interval — to pay dinner tabs — will be a presentation by a well known speaker on a scuba-related topic.
Past speakers include Jill Heinerth, Stan Waterman, Michael Aw, Amos Nachoum, Christina Zenato, Jonathan Bird, Glenn Butler, John Chatterton, Richie Kohler, David Concannon, Becky Kagan Schott, Gareth Lock, Bernie Chowdhury, Mike Emmerman, and Gary Gentile, as well as many other divers, photographers, and explorers from around the world. Presentations often include films, mixed media or slides, and cover dive topics such as travel, safety, marine life, equipment and underwater adventure. There are also plenty of opportunities to socialize!
The club relies on the efforts of members who volunteer to be officers on the Executive Committee. All of these jobs are open to any active member in good standing. Six of these positions are elected by the membership at the November meeting. These officers make up the Board of Directors, who vote on various club matters as per the bylaws, and who appoint the additional non-elected members of the Executive Committee.
Newly certified, new diver in the area, or looking for a dive buddy? You are SO VERY WELCOME to attend our next meeting and find out more about us. Besides checking this website, you can keep up with us on our Meetup page, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
