The New York Underwater Photographic Society

NYUPS is a community for anyone interested in underwater photography or video. We have regular meetings in New York City, sometimes featuring world renowned guests like David Doubilet, Amos Nachoum, Howard Schatz or Emory Kristof. Other times we just meet to share our own work on a specific theme.

Our goal is to promote the art of underwater imaging, and to help our members improve their skills through sharing and discussing their photos and videos. Our meetings are for all levels - it doesn’t matter what equipment you use or how long you've been shooting. Also, you do NOT need to submit material to attend the meetings – feel free to just come and enjoy the presentations, learn from the discussion and make your own comments. However, will only show submitted images if the creator is at the meeting.

You can be notified about our meetings by joining the Big Apple Divers - our announcements and calls for submissions are sent to the whole club. If you prefer, you can also just email us at photos@bigappledivers.com, and we will add your name to the distribution list.

Here are some of the images which were submitted by our members to the last meeting, the theme of which was "Juveniles". Click on the controls to page through the gallery. You can also see submissions from our past meetings on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Unlike most of our monthly sessions, there will be no submitted member images presented at the next meeting September 15th, 2026. Instead, we are very happy to have Pedro Valencia as a guest speaker, who will be delivering a lecture entitled "shooting in the dark".

Pedro is an underwater photographer, videographer, scuba diving instructor, and underwater photography educator based in Cozumel, Mexico. He has been diving since the age of 16 and has spent years exploring and documenting the underwater world.

With a background in digital design and animation, Pedro approaches underwater photography as a form of visual storytelling. His work is especially focused on macro life and Blackwater photography, with a particular fascination for plankton and the incredible diversity of life that rises from the deep each night.

Today, Pedro combines his work as a photographer with teaching and guiding. He teaches underwater photography and leads specialized dives for photographers, helping them improve everything from buoyancy, composition, lighting, and subject selection to the creative process behind making stronger images underwater.

Based in Cozumel, he is passionate about creating diving experiences where photography is not an afterthought, but the reason for the dive.
